Welcome incoming students! We are pleased to announce that the following students have accepted our offer to join the Genetics GIDP doctoral program beginning in July and August, 2006:

Matthew (Matt) Hart received his BS in Cellular/Molecular Biology from University of Washington ( Seattle) in June 2004.  He brings research experience in the laboratory of Irving Weissman at Stanford University’s Hopkins Marine Station and is currently a Research Associate at the Allen Institute for Brain Science in Seattle.  He was born in Tucson to parents who are both UA alumni, and is interested in disease genetics, especially relating to Multiple Scleroses and cancer.  Matt is the recipient of the first David C. Rowe Scholarship Award in Genetics.

Maureen Peterson is completing her BS in Genetics at University of California, Davis.  She has been awarded a BIO5 Directors Award for 2006-07.  Her research interests include regulation of the cell cycle and cellular responses to damages in DNA.

Devika Unnithan received her BS in Biology from the University of Arizona, and is completing her MS in Entomology here this semester.  She is interested in research opportunities pertaining to molecular genetics and evolutionary biology.

Welcome incoming students! We are pleased to announce that the following students have accepted our offer to join the Genetics GIDP doctoral program beginning in July and August, 2005:

Katie Olson, from Briar Cliff University ( Iowa), has lab experience in inorganic chemistry and has expressed an interest in human genetics. We are proud that she was selected to perform a summer internship at TGen, where she is researching the genetic basis of melanoma.

Helen Smith, from Rutgers University has been working on chromatin remodeling in S. pombe and is interested in cancer research, cell cycle regulation and virology.

The August 2009 issue of PLoS Genetics features a cover image illustrating the article by Genetics faculty members Ravi Palanivelu and David Mount.

Felicia Goodrum was the only professor in Arizona honored with the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. Goodrum, who works in the departments of immunobiology and molecular and cellular biology and is a member of the Genetics GIDP faculty, BIO5 Institute and Arizona Cancer Center, studies the human cytomegalovirus, or HGMV.

Robert Valenzuela, MS from ASU who recently published two papers (one as first author) in Genetics on QTLs of life span in Drosophila.  Robert is interested in aging and diabetes.

Thank you to the following people who have so graciously donated to the Genetics Graduate Interdisciplinary Program:

  • Mr. Irving I. Silverman, a gift of cash which enabled us to open an interest-bearing University of Arizona Foundation account
  • Dr. Bob Erickson, two framed art prints
  • Dr. Linda Restifo, a year’s worth of the printed journal “Genetics”
